Do Cell Phones Really Cause Brain Cancer?

The cell phone today is more ubiquitous than ever, and scientific studies continue to try to distinguish the relationship between cellular phones and cancer.

A recent study from the National Institutes of Health showed increased brain activity in participants exposed to cell phone radiation. The study used PET scans to measure the brain's sugar level, and found increased activity in regions closest to the phone's antenna after 50 minutes of exposure. Although the increased activity isn't directly linked to harmful effects, the human brain's evident sensitivity to the phone's electromagnetic waves does raise further questions.

In May 2011, the World Health Organization reclassified cell phone radiation exposure as "possibly carcinogenic," a label that places it in the same category as chloroform and lead. The most extensive case control study of cellular phones and cancer, the Interphone study, conducted across 13 countries for a decade found that the highest grade of mobile phone users-those who used their phones for 30 minutes a day over 10 years or more- were twice as likely to develop glioma, a malignant brain tumor. These results are alarming, particularly because the study failed to take into account that children and young adults are far more susceptible to cell phone radiation than adults.

Cellular phone radiation testing conducted by manufacturers also underestimates the amount of radiation that users are exposed to. A recent paper published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine revealed that industry testing is done on a mannequin modeled after a 6'2", 200 pound man with the phone held one inch from the mannequin's ear. The study estimates that 97 percent of the population deviate from this unrealistic model of usage and experience greater exposure.

The Federal Communications Commission requires a mobile phone to have a Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), a measure of the peak of electromagnetic radiation level in a model, of less than 1.6 watts per kilogram. However, the peak SAR may not represent the actual SAR levels of a typical phone call. A cellular phone with a lower SAR may expose the user to more radiation on average than one with a higher SAR. A study conducted by a bioengineering research professor, Dr. Henry Lai, found effects of memory loss in rats exposed to SAR levels as low 0.0006 to 0.06 watts per kilogram.

As of 2010, there are over 223 million mobile phone users in the US over the age of 13 and the numbers are constantly growing. According to the CTIA, the Wireless Association, the total minutes of cell phone use in America in 2009 was 2.3 trillion minutes. Cellular phone users are also starting at younger ages. Given the indispensable role of cell phones in our lives and the increasing concern about an association between cell phone use and cancer, regulatory agencies should carry out more thorough investigations, and cell phone users should exercise caution and take steps to lower their exposure to cell phone radiation.

Long-Term Use of Mobile Phones Increase Risk of Suffering From Brain Cancer

Scientists have pointed out that long-term use of mobile phones can increase the risk of cancer. But the World Health Organization had conducted a 10-year study on the safety of mobile phones and concluded that mobile phone didn't cause cancer because the relevant evidence is not sufficient to draw a conclusion. In order to find impact on human health from cell phone, they spent at least 15 million pounds in the past 10 years, but the authors of this paper had to admit that this effect requires further study in order to give the final conclusion.

Reports from World Health Organization would be released until this week later, but two national newspapers in the United Kingdom reported that invoked the scientific evidence use the phone less than 30 minutes per day at least 10 years would increase the risk of suffering from brain cancer, Over the past 10 years, they have been carried out this phone research in 13 countries, which is regarded the largest study by far.

Although we clearly that when we put the phone at the ear, radiation from cell phone is absorbed by the mind, but it is not confirmed that more often use cell phones are hazardous to health, it may be due to the time of the widely use of mobile phones in public is not long. From 2000 to 2004, researchers conducted a study which 1.3 million people was participated to see the time they use the phone. Among them, some people suffer from cancer while some people are very healthy.

Some research has been published, which showed that people who used cell phone at least 30 minutes a day suffered from an increased risk of Glioma. The place where brain tumor lie is just the side they always put phone calls. In addition, the study found another big question: short term use of mobile phones, in fact, helps prevent cancer. Even if the authors think this is unlikely. As the problem, they want more research to get a final conclusion and the investigation should firstly be launch among young people.

Although the Ministry of Health in British has not updated the relevant guidelines in the past 4 years, but the experts pointed out that adults should discourage small children playing phone chat, as for adult, try to answer the phone as shorter as possible. Other countries have also taken corresponding measures, such as encouraging people to use headphones to answer the phone or using text messaging instead of phone.

Is There a Link Between Cell Phones and Brain Tumors?

Today everyone is informed about the dangers of smoking cigarettes but back in the 1970's nine out of ten doctors recommended smoking Camels. My point being, there is a multi-billion dollar cell phone industry that has a vested interest in keeping the public unaware of the dangers of cell phones.

It's now official, the studies are out, there is a definite link between cell phones and malignant brain tumors.

An article published in The Sun titled "Cancer Risk in Mobile Phones: Official" starts with the sentence "MOBILE phones DO increase the risk of brain cancer, scientists claimed yesterday."

The article goes on to say French scientists found that a person who is a long-term mobile phone user is more likely to develop a malignant brain tumor called glioma.

"The chances of developing a malignant tumour are "significantly increased" for people who use a mobile for ten years. The shock finding is the result of the biggest ever study by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, part of the World Health Organisation."

This is just one newspaper article out of thousands that are saying essentially the same thing.

If you do some deeper research into the peer reviewed studies, you'll find out cell phones actually heat up the brain around the ear area by a degree or two. This effectively breaks down the blood brain barrier, which is a defense against the poisons in your body becoming lodged in your brain.

With an open blood-brain barrier, harmful things like heavy metals, are allowed to cross into your brain and cause permanent damage. Talking on your cell phone for ten minutes opens your blood-brain barrier for the next 14 hours.

Take your health into your own hands, do some research on cell phones and brain cancer, and then take steps to protect yourself and loved ones.

Cell Phones and Brain Tumors - New Evidence of Wireless Mobile Phone Linked to Brain Cancer

OK, here we go again. Decades ago, there was widespread panic over the possibility that overhead high tension electrical power lines could be a cause of cancer for people living in close proximity or underneath them. When that was disproved, the doomsday crowd went onto blame cell phones as a possible risk of brain cancer due to tiny amounts of radiation emitted when the phone is transferring data. Thus far, after dozens of studies, there has been NO conclusive evidence that cell phones produce a significant enough amount of radiation to create a measurable increase in the risk of cancer. But is there a cause for concern? Just who conducted those tests?

A new joint study from the University of California at Berkeley and multiple Universities in Korea, reexamined 465 article published in major journals along with 23 large scale case studies of over 37,916 patients. The study group was comprised of patients with and without brain tumors. They found that when they look at the group as a whole, there was no association between brain tumors and cell phone use. When they looked closer however, and divided the large group into clinically significant subgroups, there was a clear increase in risk for cancer, of up to 30%. Furthermore, they found that some of the previous studies that had yielded results of "no risk," were in fact funded by cell phone manufacturers.

Other experts including neurosurgeons have long agreed that cell phones can cause brain tumors. One such doctor, Dr. Vini Khurana, even stated that he thought mobile phones could be more dangerous than smoking or asbestos. He pointed out the there are 3 billion cell phone users in the world, which is a whopping 3 times the number of smokers worldwide, and smoking leads to 5 million deaths per year.

Advocate groups still insist however that there is no concrete, established risk. They cite correctly that in journal after peer reviewed journal, there is an overwhelming consensus that wireless cell phones do not pose a public health risk. Their claims are further backed up by the FDA, the FCC, American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute and the World Health Organization. Imagine, all of those private and federal watchdog groups agreeing on a single thing!

What's the bottom line? This author still isn't sure. All I know is that there are still people who believe that the lunar landing was a big hoax. There are nurses that work for me, that sadly, still won't get vaccinations for their kids for fear of increased risk of Down syndrome. For me, I'm not giving up my cell phone anytime soon. If the risk really is that significant, then we can also say that "the place we carry the phone on our bodies, may increase the risk of cancer in that particular body area." For instance, I often carry my cell phone in my shirt pocket. Will I have an increased risk for breast cancer? Hmm, I always wondered what a mammogram would feel like...

Is There a Correlation Between Cell Phones and Brain Tumors?

There have been many studies conducted that indicate that there could be a correlation between cell phones and brain tumors. As a matter of fact, these studies actually lead medical professionals and other types of specialists to believe that there is, in fact, a relationship between the development of brain tumors and frequent phone use.

As a matter of fact, legislators in the State of Maine recently tried to get a bill passed in which cell phone manufacturers would have to put the following warning on their phones prior to distributing them to retailers:

"...This device emits electromagnetic radiation, exposure to which may cause brain cancer..."

- Courtesy of CNN.com Video

While this particular request to pass this bill failed in March of 2010, the Federal Drug Administration is encouraging companies that manufacturer these devices to create phones that help eliminate the increased exposure to the radiation that increases the risks associated with brain tumors and the onset of brain cancer.

What do the Professionals Have to Say?

The medical professionals and various researchers that have studied the effect of long term cell phone use state that there could be a biological based issue involved that result in issues that pertain to the tissues in the body.

These professionals stand by the fact that cell phones have not really been in use long enough to provide concise statistical data that supports the claims, but they also stand by the fact that the possibilities are there that there could be a direct correlation between brain cancer and the use of this type of mobile device.

While cell phones are found to meet the FCC's standards for safety, but medical professionals are urging individuals that use these phones to understand that there could be a potential issue and to use the devices with caution.

Preventing Brain Tumors with Cell Phone Use

Based on the epidemiological studies conducted by those that are interested in establishing the link between cell phone use and brain tumors, the evidence is not conclusive enough to say that there is a direct link. However, these professionals do believe that there are some strategies that may be used to successfully prevent the possibility that brain tumors may develop as a result of phone use. The following prevention strategies seem to be logical based on what is known about this link:

• Individuals that use a cell phone should keep the mobile device as far away from their body as possible to reduce the exposure to the radiation that is emitted from the device.

• There are many hands-free and standard headsets that may be used in conjunction with cell phones. Those that are concerned about their exposure to radiation should use these cell phone accessories.

• Individuals that have a family history or a personal medical history that includes any type of tumor and/or cancer - specifically in the head and spinal cord region - should have regular checkups to ensure that they are in the clear on such medical complications as newly developed tumors.

If these strategies are incorporated when cell phones are used, an individual's chance of developing a brain tumor may be drastically reduced.

Do Cell Phones Cause Brain Cancer?

A part of me wishes we definitively knew the answer to this question simply to get people to refrain from talking on their cell phones while driving. Nothing is more frustrating on the road than seeing bad driving practices only to see the driver blabbing on a phone. In addition, we know that driving while talking on a mobile phone is equivalent to driving with an illegal blood alcohol level with regards to reaction time and focus on the road. People have been killed in car accidents by someone talking on a phone. I was in a car accident about 3 years ago when I was rear-ended by a woman talking on her cell phone. It is now illegal to talk on a cell phone while driving in California and other states are catching on as well. We also know that a headset or speaker phone does not reduce the risk of an accident. But I digress, we were supposed to be talking about brain cancer.

According to the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association Americans spent 2.2 trillion minutes on their cell phones in 2008 which was a 100 billion minute increase from the previous year. Cell phones are becoming more and more advanced in their capabilities and at the same time, increasing their radio frequency output. A few studies have shown an increase in brain tumors on the same side of the head where the user holds the phone, but other studies have shown no association.

A 2009 study looked at 23 studies of 38,000 people and found no connection between cell phone use and brain tumors. However, there was a subset analysis of eight studies which showed a 10-30% increase in the risk of tumors from long-term use compared to people who rarely used a cell phone.

The European Environment Agency has stepped up and warned against the use of mobile phones in children because they have their entire lives ahead of them with exposure to radio frequencies and radiation. John Bucher, the associate director of the National Toxicology Program, testified before the Senate's Health and Human Services Committee. He stated that cell phone radiation penetrates deeper into a child's brain because of the configuration of a young, growing skull.

Professor Lennart Hardell is a Swedish researcher who is at the leading edge of cell phone radiation and brain cancer risk research. He has found an increased risk of brain tumors from 10 or more years of mobile phone use. Several studies of his have been published with the following key findings:

For every 100 hours of cell phone use, the risk of brain cancer increases by 5%. For every year of use, the risk of brain cancer increases by 8%.After 10 or more years of digital cell phone use, there was a 280% increased risk of brain cancer. For digital cell phone users who were teenagers or younger when they first started using mobile phones, there was a 420% increased risk of brain cancer.

Why is there conflicting evidence? Is there special interest involved and who funded the studies in question? Dr. Hardell's research is very compelling and I tend to trust European studies over American studies because there is usually less of a money-trail in Europe. There is a lot of money to be made on cell phone use and we live in a country where the bottom line means everything.

In addition, why is it clearly stated in the fine print of cell phone manuals to use caution regarding radio frequencies and warnings about keeping the phone as far away from the body as possible? Radiation decreases as the square of the distance from the phone. The farther the phone is from your body, the less radiation exposure. One example is the Blackberry 8300 which clearly states: "When using any data feature of the Blackberry device, with or without a USB cable, keep the device at least.98 inches from your body and it should not be worn or carried on the body." This is clear enough for me that the cell phone manufacturers know the potential dangers of radiation.

Dr. Devra Lee Davis is the director of the Center for Environmental Oncology at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and author of the book Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide it, and How to Protect Your Family. She has testified before congress about this subject and has published numerous articles as well. She recommends the following to reduce your risk:

Put your phone in the "flight" or "off-line" mode when carrying, storing, or charging it.  This stops the electromagnetic emissions.Avoid carrying your cell phone on your body or storing it near your body at night.Use a wired headset (not Bluetooth!) or the speaker-phone mode to keep the phone as far from your body as possible while talking.Switch sides of your head regularly while talking.Use text messaging instead of talking.Choose a device with the lowest SAR possible.  SAR stands for specific absorption rate, a measure of the strength of electromagnetic fields.Children should only use cell phones near their heads for emergencies.  Texting away from the body is safer for children than talking on a cell phone.Avoid using the phone while the signal is weak or when moving at high speeds as in a car or train.  This increases the power to the phone as it tries to stay connected.

Until more research is done that is not funded by the phone industry I will treat this as if cell phone radiation is in fact detrimental to my health. It is better to be safe than sorry and the studies that show an increased risk of brain tumors are simply too compelling to ignore. Use the simple steps outlined in this article and choose a phone with a low SAR to protect yourself from potential damage.

Cell/Cordless Phones and the Link to Malignant Brain Tumours

Until recently, there had been a lack of information about the health risks from cell phones by doctors and scientists in the Unites States and Canada. Dr. Ronald B. Herberman's recommendation to drastically reduce the use of cell phones, especially with children, has begun to shine a light on the information regarding phone radiation that has been lacking in the U.S. Dr. Herberman is by no means the first to bring attention to the dangers of cell phone radiation.

Research by University of Washington professor Dr. Henry Lai shows brain cells are clearly damaged by microwave levels far below the U.S. government's 'safety' guidelines. Dr. Lai notes that even tiny doses of radio frequency can accumulate over time and lead to harmful effects. He warns that public exposure to radiation from wireless transmitters 'should be limited to a minimum.'

Dr. Henry Lai's studies confirm that cell and cordless phone microwave can:
Damage nerves in the scalpCause blood cells to leak hemoglobinCause memory loss and mental confusionCause headaches and induce extreme fatigueCreate joint pain, muscle spasms and tremorsCreate burning sensation and rash on the skinAlter the brain's electrical activity during sleepInduce ringing in the ears, impair sense of smellPrecipitate cataracts, retina damage and eye cancerOpen the blood-brain barrier to viruses and toxinsReduce the number and efficiency of white blood cellsStimulate asthma by producing histamine in mast cellsCause digestive problems and raise bad cholesterol levelsStress the endocrine system, especially pancreas, thyroid, ovaries, and testes

For the last 40 years everyone has been told of the dangers of smoking. Today, wireless phone research stands where smoking research stood then. Recent news has stated that cell and cordless phones can lead to brain tumors. Dr. Vini Gautam Khurana, a Mayo Clinic-trained neurosurgeon with an advanced neurosurgery Fellowship in cerebral vascular and tumour microsurgery from the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, published a critical review stating that "malignant brain tumour incidence and its associated death rate will be observed globally to rise within" the next 10 years due to cell phone use. Dr. Khurana believes that children are at the greatest risk due to brain tissue that is still developing. Still today, with the dangers we know about smoking, hundreds of thousands of people die yearly from smoking related ailments. Dr. George Carlo, Ph.D, M.S., J.D, is a public health scientist, epidemiologist, lawyer, and the founder of the Science and Public Policy Institute, believes that by 2015, "one out of every four people will suffer from some symptom of illness from cell phone use." Starting today, we need to limit the use of cell phones, especially among children, and eliminate non-essential calls.

Our most precious resource, our nation's children are exposed to a risk that no one seems to notice: cell phone radiation. While scientists around the world are pressuring their local governments to restrict the use of wireless devices by children, the U.S. and Canada do nothing. Go to any mall, movie theater, or school and you'll see young people all with one ear to the newest devices on the market. The brain of a child is constantly developing, undergoing changes and obtaining more information in a few short years at a rate that won't be matched for the rest of their lives. Add to this the radiation from cell phone exposure through the inner ear and it creates a laboratory with unknown consequences. Studies over the last five years have shown that the rate at which children develop autism is concurrent with increased cell phone use. The studies also suggest the electromagnetic radiation from wireless devices (like cell phones) in conjunction with environmental and genetic factors all increase the incidence of autism.

With the prevalence of the link of cell phone use to cancer in the media as of late, professions other than just those in the medical community are beginning to take notice. The article Cell Phone Use and Cancer: The Debate Continues from LawyersandSettlements.com discusses not only the possible link of Senator Ted Kennedy's brain tumor to cell phone radiation, but the Larry King Live show from earlier this month on cell phones.

On May 23, 2008, The Larry King Show's topic was "Are Cell Phones Dangerous?" CNN Medical Director, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, was very supportive of the fact that mobile phones could be dangerous. Guests on the program that evening included Johnnie Cochran's widow and his neurosurgeon. Johnnie Cochran had died from a brain tumor three years ago. At that time, his daughter had attributed his death to his cell phone use. The tumor which killed him was located behind the ear the he had used while talking on his phone.

Near the end of the program, Dr. Gupta made two suggestions which he felt would decrease the potential risk from mobile phone usage:
Use a case on your hip to hold your phone.Use a wired headset to keep the cell phone away from the ear.

Both of these suggestions are wrong!

The reason why carrying a mobile phone on the hip isn't any safer than carrying it in your pocket is the fact that it transmits radiation directly into the body while your cell phone is on. For men, studies done by the American Society for Reproductive Health have shown that this radiation affects men's fertility and can lower sperm count. For pregnant women, carrying a mobile phone this way may affect the unborn child's future behavioral patterns, according to a recent UCLA study. What should be done is when the cell phone is not being used, shut it off.

As for wired headsets, studies in Europe by one of the most influential consumer protection organizations concluded that wired headsets increase radiation into the ear by as much as 300%! Bluetooth devices are nearly as dangerous since the signal from the phone transmits radiation directly into the ear.

Cell Phones and Brain Cancer - The Truth be Told

It is interesting that we have seen a good deal about the challenges of Cell Phones in the media lately. I've noted articles in the USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and on TV on CNN, CNBC, and MSNBC. What concerns me is that there were studies in Switzerland in 1996, 1997, 1998, and 1999 and yet it was as if there was a media blackout here in the US. And realize this was back when cell phones were switching over from the 3 Watt phones which is a lot more power and thus, more micro-wave intensity.

That is to say, they were much worse back then for the human bio system, and the antennas were more robust as well, and the cell towers were further apart averaging 7-miles or more, today more like 3-miles. This higher power setting and bigger antennas means more brain cookage! Back then we were told there was nothing to worry about; perfectly harmless, now we find out, well, actually they weren't.

There was an interesting book review article on Kurzweil's Accelerating Intelligence online recently on May 24, 2011 titled "Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation, What the Industry Has Done to Hide It, and How to Protect Your Family" - Devra Davis, published by Dutton Adult, 2010. The book review states;

"Much-anticipated, explosive expose of how cell phone use damages brain cells, especially in children, by one of the world's foremost scientific experts in the field - an array of recent and long suppressed research in this timely bombshell. Cell phone radiation is a national emergency. Stunningly, the most popular gadget of our age has now been shown to damage DNA, break down the brain's defenses, and reduce sperm count while increasing memory loss, the risk of Alzheimer's disease, and even cancer."

You see, here is a gentleman who wrote a whole book on the topic, not just a cutesy article for mainstream media. It's got all the studies, research, including these latest studies everyone is reading about showing how the cell phone radiation is causing DNA to breakdown, and that the cell phones are carcinogenic.

That's just scary stuff, and what about pregnant mothers with their cell phones strapped to their hips using the blue-tooth on their ear. Their brains are safe in that case, but how is their unborn baby doing there, I ask? Still more questions, but if you want some real answers, I guess I'd recommend this book to you too. Please consider all this.

Cell Phones and Brain Cancer: Is There a Link?

With the recent announcement by WHO (world health organisation) about the potential dangers of cell phone radiation, we are all naturally concerned, especially those of us who use cell phones regularly and/or who have kids with cell phones. What is safe, we wonder, in terms of use, cell phone type and exposure? Are some cell phones safer than others, and are there ways in which we can limit the dangers by changing our usage patterns?

While the answers are still coming in, there are things we can do to help protect ourselves. These tips come from a variety of sources, including a brain scientist who has recovered from brain cancer (Dr. David Servan-Schreiber - if you have not yet read his book, Anticancer, A New Way of Life go get it! It's an excellent read for anyone wishing to prevent cancer, or already dealing with the health challenges cancer presents). Simultaneously, we are all terrified of cancer but somehow in denial that it will ever touch us personally. It's time we look clearly at the rampart cancer rates of the last decade and take as many steps as we can personally to protect our health.

When it comes to this health issue, we are all exposed to radiation in varying degrees, even those of us who do not have a cell phone. In North America, unless you live in the remote wilds and are completely off the grid, you're likely affected, even if from cell towers and criss-crossing signals in the air. Experts are telling us that cordless phones pose similar risks, and it s only as more studies come to completion that the alarming statistics are becoming available. Nonetheless, mobile phones and smart phones are here to stay, so let's do what we can given that reality.

For one thing, most mobile phone manufacturers now offer a protection rating on their phones, as consumers become increasingly aware and concerned. Ask your provider about your specific phone and be sure to check the rating of any phone you buy. Other tips include using a headset rather than putting the phone directly to your ear when talking, and leaving the phone away from your wear until someone answers; according to experts the signal is stronger when the phone is ringing, before it connects. The signal is also stronger when you are between cell towers, so if the connection is bad hang up and try later when it's safer. For children and teens with developing brains, limit cell phone use and if anything, encourage texting over speaking (who ever thought anyone would say that?).
